How can you truly differentiate your dessert from the competition? Is it getting that perfectly moist bake, or is it adding that ideal scoop of creamy vanilla ice cream on top? Meike Beck, the director of Good Housekeeping Cookery, and Monaz Dumasia, a home economist, were our go-to food experts to ask how to make everyone's favorite course even more decadent. Summer's great fruit bounty will unavoidably pull you into the kitchen, even if only for a short time to prepare a delicious (and simple!) fruit dessert. The hardest part will be deciding what to bake because there are so many options besides crisps, crumbles, and cobblers, such as betties, fools, slumps, buckles, and pandowdies. What does each of them mean? Betty: Layers of fruit and buttered breadcrumbs are used to make a baked fruit dessert. Cake with fruit incorporated into the dough before baking and a crumbly streusel topping called a buckle. Fruit dessert baked in a cobbler with a substantial biscuit crust. Fruit dish that has been baked with a crisp, crunchy topping. Crumble is the British name for a crisp or crunch with oatmeal in the topping. Fruit is placed between two layers of sweetened buttered crumbs in a baked fruit treat
